The Division of Perfusion at the Jo Ann Medical Center is a part of Cardiac Surgery Department. Clinical Perfusion service is mainly involved in providing temporary support to the patient’s circulatory system during heart surgery and other procedures when required.
During open – heart surgery e.g. bypass surgery, replacement/repair of heart valves etc, the heart and lungs are stopped for the surgeon to work on the delicate structures of the heart. Whilst being supported by the heart lung machine, the perfusionist is entrusted with the wellbeing and the safety of the patient. The perfusionist monitors and adjusts the patient’s physiological parameters such as the blood pressure, body temperature, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood.
A members of the Perfusion Service are also represents ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) team, which are ready to implement ECMO service.
